Floor Covering - What to Expect

A Floor Covering installer necessitates the learning of specific skills and safety procedures to be able to install various types of flooring to perfection. Several classroom and on-the-job hours are needed to become a skilled floor covering installer and on your way to a top-paying journeyman position.

Training classes are held year-round and are mandatory for all apprentices. Under the guidance of an instructor, apprentices will receive training in the following subjects but not limited to:
  • OSHA Health & Safety
  • CPR/First Aid
  • Labor History
  • Estimating
  • Proper and Safe Use of Power Tools
  • Proper and Safe Use of Hand Tools
  • Health and Safety for the Floor Coverer
  • Introduction to the Floor Covering Trade
  • Floor Preparation
  • Materials & Tools of the Floor Covering Trade
  • Installation Methods for Resilient Floor Covering
  • Installation Methods for Laminate and Hardwood Flooring
  • Installation Methods of Carpet and Synthetic Turf

An apprentice will be released from on-the-job work to an assigned training center for periods of one week at a time. The apprentice will continue to learn the skills needed to eventually work on any flooring project.
